the use of imagination or original ideas to create something, inventiveness.
"firms are keen to encourage creativity"
synonyms: inventiveness, imagination, imaginativeness, innovation, innovativeness, originality, individuality...
Now that we've got all the technical stuff out of the way, what does creativity mean to you?
The office worker, the bookmark string threader, the printer paper feeder, the lift operator, the milk bottle squeezer, the pork scratching spotter, the cheese slicer, the bitumen tester and the tablet picker. (Some of the most boring jobs in the world, apparently). No matter how far removed and or 'boring' your profession is from that of the creative industry we all consume creativity on some level. Whether that's gaming, TV, art, theatre, film, comic con and the list goes on.
We all are on some level masters of the subject.
So, why do a lot of us feel so detached from creativity - in terms of making - when all it really requires is an imagination? We all have one of those, right? If not, your dreams at night must be a torturous place of blandness. My condolences.
Is it fear of being branded a weirdo? As lets be honest you have to be pretty weird to be good at it.
Or fear of what to do? As creativity like my blog picture game potential is limitless.
For so much of our informative years we are told in school and institutions how to think, behave and to reason. What's right, wrong, and or morally and socially acceptable.
Creativity runs in the face of all of that.
(WARNING: Personal opinion coming!)
I think that scares some people.
I've lost count of how many times I have had people approach me and say 'I would love to write a book but...' 'I would love to paint but...' 'I would love to make a film but...' and I find myself like a broken record repeating the same line back to them 'just do it'.
If something regularly plays on your mind, if you go to sleep and you can't stop dreaming about it and you feel this weird sense of happiness and peace when you think about it. Then eat the damn cake!
I'm sorry, I got sidetracked.
Just do it!
Don't be stunted by the world and it's opinions.
What have you got to lose?
I challenge you, every single one of you that has creative 'leanings' (which, lets be honest is everyone) write that first page of that book, do that first sketch, start planning that first short script.
Whatever it is (legal) for one day, be a weirdo, a rebel, an innovator.
You have one shot at this life make your mark by being a one man/woman revolutionist.
Even if it's just you that's aware of your badassery. Have your fricking eureka moment, take off your bland clothes and run naked through life (in your mind of course, as you'll only get arrested if you let it all hang down Oxford Street).
Tweet us @Butestreetfest Instagram us @Butestreetfest and Facebook us at Bute Street Festival and let us know about your eureka moment and use #roadtobutestreet and we will post the best ones. Which will most probably be all of them as there are no rules to creativity, right?
