What's going on in Luton? As part of the Bute Street Festival programme we offer monthly film nights with a twist. 

Our film nights give you the best of what independent film has to offer with inspiring shorts and moving features, and also not forgetting the opportunity to meet the filmmaker for a Q&A session. 

THE DAY SHALL COME

Screening Date: Thursday 13th July, at 19:30PM

 

Feature synopsis: 

In the absurdist dark political satire "The Day Shall Come" (2019), a nutty and naive African American preacher, his worried family, and a small group of followers aim to bring hope to Miami's projects through his own version of God. When faced with eviction, he reluctantly agrees to an arms deal orchestrated by a nefarious character. Unbeknownst to him, the FBI plans to use him as a pawn in a false flag operation. But they underestimate his pacifist beliefs, loyalty, and unpredictable nature. Hilarity ensues as the preacher unwittingly upends their plans.

Sequin in a Blue Room

Film synopsis: 
 

The story of 16-year-old Sequin (Leach), who is exploring his burgeoning sexuality through an obsession with anonymous, no-strings-attached sexual encounters. That is until he finds his way into The Blue Room - a strictly anonymous sex party - where he meets a captivating stranger.

Just Like You & AfterSUN

Short synopsis: "Just Like  You" is a poignant short documentary that follows a handyman from the south coast of England as he delves into his opiate addiction, seeking to understand its roots in tinter-generational trauma within his family. Determined to break the cycle before it impacts his young daughter, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery and healing 

 

Feature synopsis: 

This compelling film is accompanied by the theme of "Aftersun," which juxtaposes a hopeful coming-of-age story with a moving family portrait, leaving a lasting impact on viewers. In "Aftersun," set in a fading vacation resort in the late 1990s, 11-year-old Sophie cherishes precious moments with her loving and idealistic father, Calum. However, as she witnesses the challenges he faces beyond their idyllic holiday, she begins to grasp the weight of his struggles outside of fatherhood. Two decades later, Sophie's bittersweet memories of their last vacation paint a powerful and heartrending picture of their relationship. Through Charlotte Wells’ exceptional and emotionally charged debut film, she endeavors to reconcile the father she thought she knew with the man he truly was.
